Lisbon Design Week 2025: Highlights and Key Exhibitions

Design — 26 May 2025

From May 28 to June 1, with over 250 names and 95 locations, the Portuguese capital confirms itself as a hub of design and creativity in its third edition

Positioned between Milan Design Week in April and 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen in June, Lisbon Design Week affirms itself as a strategic event in the European design calendar. From May 28 to June 1, the city transforms into a vibrant cultural lab, celebrating contemporary design, fine craftsmanship, and project culture in all its forms. With more than 250 creatives featured across 95 venues—including studios, galleries, exhibition spaces, showrooms, and historic architecture—LDW 2025 broadens its scope by adding two new neighborhoods, Ajuda/Belém/Restelo and Beato/Marvila, strengthening its commitment to highlighting Lisbon’s creative energy.

Among the institutional partnerships, a standout is the one with MUDE - Museu do Design, which leads with the Young Design Generation Open Call Exhibition. The initiative received a record 157 submissions from young talents, with 20 selected to present their work in dialogue with the museum’s permanent collection. The official poster, created by young graphic designer Bernardo Berga, boldly captures this year’s visual identity.

The five-day program stretches across the entire city, including Santos/Lapa, São Bento/Estrela, Infante Santo/Alcântara, Campo d’Ourique/Amoreiras, Príncipe Real, Chiado/Bairro Alto, Baixa/Castelo, Saldanha/Avenidas Novas, Marquês/Av. Liberdade, Belém/Ajuda/Restelo, and Marvila/Beato. A highlight is the “Sobre Mesa” exhibition at the Aires Mateus Archive, curated by Spanish studio MUT Design and Portuguese designer João Xará, which explores the Iberian tradition of lingering at the table after meals through a collection of works by more than 20 emerging and established designers.

QUI GALLERY ARTICOLO

The new Locke de Santa Joana hotel serves as the main cultural hub for Lisbon Design Week 2025, hosting the Locke Rising exhibition with projects by AB+AC Architects, Mariana Ralo, and Terrakota, along with a group show from Loulé Design Lab and live podcast sessions in collaboration with Portugal Manual. Among this year’s guests is French designer Emmanuel Babled, presenting his book La Main des Autres, an intimate reflection on his creative journey and inspirations. At Prime Matter Gallery, visitors will also discover “Kukua”, a brand founded by Babled in 2021 in Zanzibar in collaboration with WomenCraft in Tanzania. This socially conscious design project brings together sustainability and craftsmanship, giving voice and value to the work of local women artisans through responsible contemporary creations. The exhibition “Terra Mater” presents ceramic, clay, and volcanic stone works by Babled and Cecile Mestelan, alongside paintings by Jean-Baptiste des Gachons.

Other key exhibitions across the city include “The Chairman” at Branca Lisboa, a retrospective celebrating Marco Sousa Santos’ 15-year career through his iconic chairs; “Perspective & Matter” in Marvila, a project by Luso Collective focused on the relationship between perception and materiality; and “The Echo of Raw Materials” at Roca Lisboa Gallery, where 12 Portuguese designers experiment with reclaimed materials through a sustainable lens. New highlights include the launch of a limited-edition chair by Pedro Cabrita Reis at Quarto Sala, in collaboration with BICAchair, and the group show “Matéria” at Banema, featuring Diogo Amaro, the BORA collective, and a site-specific installation by ALPI.

The Novobanco Gallery hosts “Perspectives of Belonging”, inspired by the bank’s photography collection. At Coletivo 284, interior designer Nini Andrade Silva and sculptor João Parrinha transform the space into an imaginary beach, while the Verride Palace Gallery presents the debut of the Portuguese homeware brand Tilburg, designed by Klaas Van Tilburgh. Finally, Made in Situ unveils the seventh collection of “Xisto”, by French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance.
